What is a canna flower?
The canna lily plant is a rhizomatous perennial with tropical-like foliage and large flowers that resemble that of iris. Canna lilies are low maintenance and easy to grow, and both their flowers and foliage offer long lasting color in the garden. The flower color may be red, orange, or yellow.

Do cannas have deep roots?
Cannas tolerate most growing conditions. Starting them indoors will speed up blooming time; planting outdoors too early will delay flowering and possibly rot the rhizomes. Plant roots 12”-18” apart and 3”-4” deep. (Roots should have 3-5 eyes; the more eyes – the more flower stems!)
Where does canna grow?
Originally from the West Indies and South America, cannas are one of the showiest summer bulbs you can grow. These lush tropical plants produce large — sometimes colorful — leaves, and tall flower stalks with vibrant blossoms. Depending on the variety, cannas can grow a few feet tall to more than 10 feet tall.
Are cannas poisonous to dogs?
Many lilies are toxic to both dogs and cats but Canna Lilies are the exception. At a height of 18-22″ tall, plant in containers or any sunny to partially-shaded spot with well-drained soil for non-stop blooms from late spring to first frost.
Will cannas bloom more than once?
In planting zones 8 and up, cannas will repeat-bloom throughout summer, and throughout the year in zones 9 and above.
How do you keep canna blooming?
For best blooms, plant cannas in full sun, water regularly and fertilize plants 2-3 times throughout the growing season with a general 10-10-10 fertilizer. The most common reason for no flowers on a canna plant is overcrowding. When grown as perennials, canna lilies will grow and spread very quickly.
