How do you install an anti-siphon valve?

How do you install an anti-siphon valve?

This is a lot of steps but they are easy:

  1. Turn the manual on/off lever to the “on” position.
  2. Next, if there is a bleed screw, open it one turn (water will dribble out.)
  3. Now close the flow control until the valve closes.
  4. Wait one minute.
  5. Close the bleed screw and turn the manual on/off lever to the “off” position.

How do you drain an anti-siphon valve?

On some units there will be drain fitting located beneath the Anti-siphon device or backflow preventer. Open this drain. Located normally in a green lidded box called the valve you will find your sprinkler system manifold drain. Turn this drain to the open position.

Are anti-siphon valves necessary?

You usually only need them if your sprinkler heads are above the level of the valve by more than six inches or so. The lines in your house are pressurized by the water in them, so the risk of backflow is pretty low unless your heads are well above the valve.

Do I need a backflow preventer with anti-siphon valves?

Note: If you use anti-siphon valves for backflow prevention all of your zone valves must be anti-siphon valves. The only exception is a drain valve for winterizing the system.

Do anti-siphon valves reduce water pressure?

They are supposed to prevent water from flowing backward if the city water pressure were to suddenly drop. These one way valves always leak and if you turn off the faucet while the garden hose is pressurized, the anti-siphon valve will discharge the pressure in the hose through some vent holes.

Can you put a backflow preventer underground?

In most places where double check backflow preventers are legal, local officials will allow them to be installed underground in a vault. Double check backflow preventers can be installed lower than the irrigation system and often they are installed in basements in order to protect them from freezing.

Do anti-siphon valves prevent freezing?

Exterior Faucets The anti-siphon device can be a vacuum breaker or an air gap; this fitting is usually located in front of the handle portion of the faucet. This means that the valve is never subjected to freezing temperatures and cannot freeze and rupture, as old-style outdoor faucets are prone to do.

Should backflow valves be open or closed?

Irrigation systems should not run on house and pump water at the time because of the risk of contamination. When it comes time to use the pump, shut the valves on the backflow device and switch over.
