The Achomawi (also Achumawi, Ajumawi, and Ahjumawi) were one of several bands known as the “Pit River” tribe of Native Americans who lived in northern California. They lived in the Fall River valley, Tule Lake, and Pit River area near Montgomery Creek in Shasta County to Goose Lake on the Oregon state line.

Food: Although acorns and salmon were their main foods, they also hunted small game, birds, and waterfowl, as well as deer and antelope in the summer. Hunting parties were often organized for big game. Venison was highly prized and associated with wealth, often being dried and stored for winter consumption.

The Achumawi probably used clamshell beads as money. These beads would have been acquired in trade from groups to the south, having been traded up from the central coast. The beads were small pieces of shell shaped into disks with a hole punched in the middle, and strung on cords.
