What is Shaker tape?
Fabric (cotton) tapes or “listing” as the Shakers called it, is soft, comfortable and extremely durable. Color may vary between dye lots. Be sure to order enough to complete your seat. Sold by the yard in 75 yard rolls.
Why did shakers hang wall chairs?
‖ With regard to the usefulness of their furniture, the Shaker chair was light enough for a woman to move easily because of its design. They followed the custom of hanging the chairs on the wall, to clean the room efficiently. The straight back posts allowed them to be neatly hung on the plain wall ( Figure 3).

The Shakers began the tradition of wall mounted furniture by placing pegs along the walls of their rooms in order to hang chairs and other furniture pieces when they are not in use. The shakers lived a very simple life, and were foremost experts in eliminating clutter.
What is Shaker tape made of?
The tape itself is heavy-duty 100% cotton canvas webbing, dyed to our specifications with fade-resistance in mind. Shaker Tape is woven on chair seats with rails, frame or dowel construction, as shown in the ladder-back chair above. The chair rails do not have to be a perfect rectangle.
How do you use Shaker tape?
Pull the entire length of tape through as you work. Continue to wrap pulling the Tape slightly taut, but not too tight until you’ve wrapped about half of the seat. The edges of the Tape should touch. Slide the foam between the upper and underneath wraps of Shaker Tape.
