Can you cut brake cable housing?
Cable housing are supposed to be cut with a proper cable and housing cutter tool, such as the Park Tool Company CN-10. These tools have a shearing action and curved blades that help prevent the housing being crushed.
What is brake cable housing?
The brake lever is connected to the brake caliper with the housing. The housing allows the cable to pass through it, going around the frame and down the fork. There are certain housings that are appropriate for a brake system as well as certain cables. The lower example is a woven or braided housing system.
How long do brake cables last?
5000 to 6000 miles is a good time frame to replace the cables. Other wise wait till they brake and either have a good stiff pedal in or nice easy spin, depending on the broken cable. Most likely it won’t be the brake cable that will go.
Can you reuse shifter cable housing?
You can reuse the existing cable/housing BUT the cable will “thread” through the shifter as opposed to brake levers where you can just remove the cable from the slot in the lever and leave everything in place.
Are brake cables and gear cables the same?
While brake and gear inner cables are nominally similar, the housings are different – brake cables use conventional ‘helical’ housing which consists of a tightly-wrapped helix of steel wire lined on both inside and outside by a plastic coating.
What cable do I need for a dropper post?
For reference, gear outer cable is often 5mm in diameter (some fancy gear outer is 4mm). Dropper Pro is 4mm diameter. Regular gear inner cables are 1.2mm thick. Dropper Pro System inner cables are 0.8mm thick.
Are shift cables universal?
It will work, all shift housing is interchangeable. If you need to change the cable too, make sure it has the correct end stop.
Should I replace my brake cables?
Of course, if you ever see visible damage – such as a cable fraying or unwinding, a kink or cut in the housing, or strands pulling through the end of a shift or compressionless brake housing – we recommend replacing it immediately.
Is jagwire better than Shimano?
Jagwire shift housing is the same dia as Shimano etc. Their Pro brake housing is a bit thicker and a lot stiffer due to be compressionless. Shimano SP41 housing and Optislick cables are very good.
How long do shifter cables last?
With that being said, your shift selector cable doesn’t have a specified lifespan. It lasts as long as it lasts. In most cases, you should get at least five to eight years out of it, but premature failure isn’t uncommon.
Can I use brake cables for gears?
in short, yes. Brake cable outers are compressible to a small degree when curved (the wire in the outer is wound like a spring). If you use one for indexed gears, the cable pull could vary slightly as the outer compresses across a curve in it’s route.
